11-17-14: I’m currently at an intensive three-day workshop in South Beach Miami, Florida learning how to fully use the RED DRAGON HD camera with cinematographers and film production people from all over: Iraq, Seattle, New York, Puerto Rico, and Uruguay. Learning a ton at the workshop to bring back to my colleagues and our CINE students. It’s my first time back to South Florida in 12 years! Will be meeting up with some old friends, colleagues, and students later in the week as well.
11-18-14: It was another highly successful, deeply engaging day of the REDucation workshop. Once again, I took a ton of notes, about four pages at least. I was so thankful to have had my laptop with me. Otherwise, I would have surely forgotten 60% of what was covered. There were just too many detailed areas.
In the afternoon we did a ton of additional hands-on shooting at different resolutions and different frame rates to play back the footage in slow motion and super slow motion. I’ve never shot at 300 fps before! Then we walked down to Espanola Way, a beautiful and historic Spanish Village settled in a little side street with beautiful restaurants.
11-19-14: And so at the end of the third and final day of my REDucation workshop, I have gotten my RED certification. It was a great, deeply positive, inspiring experience to say the very least. I got to meet a ton of great people from all over the world and the states from all different walks of life in the media world. So I can’t deny how valuable this experience has been for me, personally and professionally. This advanced workshop was the cornerstone of my entire sabbatical.
During the morning we learned how to utilize the advanced recording modes dealing with Internal Timelapse Timer, the Burst mode, and the Speed Ramp Mode (my favorite). This gives the filmmaker so many more creative abilities of what you can do while capturing in the most difficult of lighting conditions. You can alter the frames per second while shooting by setting preset settings on the camera’s sidebar buttons! It’s all very cool.
It’s also very exciting to see how many still photographers are choosing to use the RED for their still work. There’s no DLSR out there that can do as many super high-quality Raw rapid exposures continuously as the RED cameras.
Most of all, I fully understand how the RED camera is such a creative, commercial, artistic, and aesthetic gold mine. Once you get past all the advanced settings, it’s a radically empowering camera. I’m so excited about doing some new video projects on it and sharing this information with my CINE colleagues and students. It’s a golden ticket to producing greater-looking images, a stellar demo reel, and a professional-looking film.
